The Illinois House is passing budget bills, but just barely.

They’re spending the day acting on 70 bills; of those that have gone through so far, most passed with 60 votes – the minimum needed. They contained budgets for agencies such as the Illinois State Board of Education and the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

Some legislators, mainly Republicans, rose to complain that the measures were passed by assuming the temporary income tax hike would be kept in place.

“We are losing jobs, job creators and families by the second, to our surrounding states. They are leaving because the tax and spending policies thrust upon Illinoisans these many years of one-party rule,” said House Minority Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs).

A previous resolution estimated state revenue next fiscal year to be around $34 billion. House Democrats seem to be estimating revenue around $38 billion, which is possible if the income tax rate that’s set to decrease next year is instead allowed to continue.
