Vallas Rips Rauner Budget Proposal

The Bruce Rauner budget proposal is disingenuous, dishonest and worse than smoke and mirrors: That’s the assessment of the Pat Quinn campaign for governor

Rauner’s plan to cut the income tax will cost the state budget $8.5 billion, and his sales tax on services will recover about $600 million.

“In the same document to say that you want to increase funding for public education and you want to improve the quality of public education, yet you’re going to slash the general fund budget, particularly the general fund’s discretionary budget, by $8 billion, whether it’s over a single year or multiple years, is fundamentally dishonest. The bottom line is, the numbers don’t work, they don’t add up, they don’t come close to adding up,” said Democratic lieutenant governor candidate Paul Vallas (pictured).

The Rauner campaign noted that every dollar of the $8 billion in question is new to the state budget since the income tax increase took effect in 2011.

Vallas says a cut of $8 billion represents half of the state’s discretionary spending, which not only includes schools but also public safety, road maintenance and social services. Vallas also says cutting is harder than it looks: Rauner says he has a plan to cut $1 billion from state spending, which is really only $70 million that you can take to the bank.
